    En savoir plus

Some people say that Stevie Ray Vaughan was pulling his drug addicted life together in December of 1983, others will tell you that he was merely in the middle of a downward spiral that was taking its toll on the man.  Having just finished session work with The Thin White Duke, David Bowie, turning down Bowie’s tour offer no doubt saved his life.  Never-the-less, Stevie pulled it, and all of the stops out for this session with the legendary Albert King.

Following shortly on the heels of the Texas Flood release, In Session, is a live documentary musical collaboration between two veteran bluesmen ... with the young-gun sitting at ease as the old hand relays short stories, insightful explanations, and minor chatter between tracks.  But make no mistake, Stevie is not silent, preferring to allow his guitar to speak for him, and between them, taking this release to number one on The Billboard blues chart in 1999, selling over a half million copies, resulting in a splendid remastering, including new liner notes.

“Stormy Monday” opens the album with King dominating the song, though about half way through, the two begin swapping note for note, line for line, bending sounds and chords that still hang in the air today.  Both King and Vaughan deliver quite crisp and audible lyrics, though it’s their guitar work that does most of the talking ... and that’s just the way I like it.  At one point King begins to reminisce about playing at the Fillmore, remembering Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, as they break into “Blues At Sunrise,” and injecting the Hendrix chords from a previous session lick for lick.  They bounce back and forth between Texas, Chicago, and Swamp Blues, showing that these boys not only know their history, but have written much of it.

After their performance together, King would continue to tour and record until his death in 1992 ... tragically, Vaughan died in a helicopter crash in 1990.  In Session is the only known recording of the two blues giants playing together, and it's well worth a place on your shelf if you enjoy the work of either of these great blues guitarists ... and show me a blues lover who doesn’t.
