More info
As I said in my main review the tour with this album is what made me Hawkfanatic. Yet even then I recognized this as a patchy album with some of the greatest Hawkwind moments with some mediocrity. 'Spirit of the Age' is my fave song.. ever.... 'Fable' and 'Hassan' are ultra classics. 'Damnation' is okay. 'Quark' = too poppy.. 'Vulcan' and 'Iron Dream' are ordinary instrumentals. 'Days of the Underground' clumsy and hackneyed.
So 4 stars.
This release has a bonus disc which is everything I could want!
Sound is great to good, from talking to the band I didn't know this archive stuff was there. I thought they'd already exhausted the archive!
Highlights:
'Damnation' extended, 'Spirit' extended are wonderful.
'Fable' extended is a 'to die for' listen
A studio version of 'Uncle Sam's ' is wonderful
Unfortunatly the live version of 'Robot' which I believe is the same as on the Friends and Relations series is faded out as on the CD rather than the full vinyl version. While the audio quality is less than perfect on this Simon House's playing and noise crescendo on this release is awesome.
Live versions of 'High Rise' and 'Spirit' also deserve honorable mention.
So at 2 1/4 hours this is a total gem of a reissue and lifts an already good album higher.
