The psychedelic skeleton in Bob Seger's closet. Discovering the greatness of early Seger is a perennial rite of passage for garage rock fans. Your first listen to "2 + 2 = ?"—his seething anti-Vietnam War single that's every bit as mean, maybe meaner, than anything on Nuggets—forever changes your perception of the guy if his famous 70s hits with The Silver Bullet Band are all you know. His later music ain't got the same soul.
Seger's young, angry and often screaming his head off here. Over a bass sound so thick and throbbing that it loosens the screws in your stereo, this album's got everything, from heavy blues to spacey acid ballads, from trippy jams to a melodic hippie love anthem.
Today, Bob Seger's so rich that he doesn't seem to care whether or not anyone discovers this early stuff. It's been mostly out of print for decades and largely championed in the underground. It's a real used vinyl bin cult classic. Grab it when you see it.
