Oh boo hoo, Peter Green let that nasty Jeremy Spencer play on his album. Let's see now - Green names his band after his rhythm section, lets Spencer play a bunch of Elmore James rip offs and also lets the new-boy Kirwan dominate the Then Play On album. Seems like it was in Green's nature to not hog the limelight so what's the point of complaining about that 40 odd years later? No matter how great Green was, the Mac was never just a solo vehicle for him.

So anyway, this is just a straight up blues album that sounds like it was recorded in a broom cupboard. And it's great. No it doesn't set the world alight, but it's a whole lot more consistent than the debut which sounded like a bunch of good songs surrounded by a bunch of boring songs. Here there's a much more uniform sound, which could be a criticism. Certainly I used to think this was a truly boring album, and certainly nearly every Spencer song cops that Elmore James slide guitar thing. But then I realised that I actually like that so why am I complaining?

Spencer looks like a cherub faced little child, but from that face emerges this gruff voice. And he sounds great. If this album was stuff like Man of the World, Albatross, Black Magic Woman etc surrounded by Spencer's tunes I could understand the criticism he gets. But it ain't - Green here is in full blues mode as well, so Spencer's work totally compliments his partner's songs.

If you don't wanna listen to blues Mac then just give this a miss. There are plenty of variations of the Mac sound to satisfy everyone (hmm...well maybe not literally everyone). But don't be acting as if Spencer wasn't allowed to have his songs on this album it'd be some lost classic - it'd still be a badly recorded, nasty sounding blues album. Which is exactly why this is such a great album.
