Oh Tommy, why did you have to be so impulsive? So all we have left from this blazing comet (James Gang, and other obvious exceptions aside) are 1975's 'Teaser', its 1976 partner in crime 'Private Eyes' left as its premature epitaph. While the former utilises multiple sessions and musical companions, 'Teaser' with Dennis McKay co-producing, works with an unofficial Tommy Bolin Band, something Tommy himself recognised as his macho hard-rock calling-card 'Post Toastee' untangles itself into something entirely out of left-field for its finale, his support players on-hard to capture that alchemy and produce something uniquely mid 1970s. Tender soul he was too; his timid rasp ideal to maximise emotional potential on 'Hello, Again', simply Tommy's shimmering acoustic guitar leading a serene string arrangement to say what his cunning vocal dynamics 'struggle' to convey. It wasn't just his guitar playing that deliberately held back on the expected to create sky-high kicks. Take your pick here, Bolin's eclecticism evidently finding soul mates in Thin Lizzy - 'Sweet Burgundy', Norma Jean Bell's saxophone popping up to tie loose ends together on kid from the bad side of town tries to make good 'Bustin' Out for Rosey'. So good you want to punch Tommy for one tragic moment of madness, Hell, even if it wasn't you would still feel that crushing loss throbbing at the core of ‘Private Eyes’.
