A good but inconsistent album that marked a turning point in Brian Wilson's art and career. Wouldn't It Be Nice is an anthem of a decade, one of the great pop records of all time, and a piece of compositional genius. Several other tracks stand out, most notably Caroline No and Sloop John B. The lyrics are unfortunately consistently appalling and vapid, which is all the worse considering that Wilson's compositions all have a heavy lyrical focus. Much of the record sacrifices interesting counterpoint and harmony by wasting space with saccharine slow ballads. This album would go on to inspire countless others, most notably XTC, who would surpass Pet Sounds with Skylarking, an album made possible with the technology of the '80s. One only wonders what a Brian Wilson in his prime could accomplish in the year 2012.
Pet Sounds is musically superior to anything by The Beatles, but it has nothing to say in comparison.
