More info

Is this the great lost Pretty Things album? Well yes and no. No in the sense that the lead vocals are handled by French playboy Philippe Debarge rather than Phil May, though May is on backing vocals. But the thing is, Debarge was obviously such a fanboy that he does his best Phil May inpersonation so it's actually quite easy to listen to this and not notice that this isn't Phil May singing.

Another reason for saying no to this being the lost Pretties album is that, as expected of a vanity project I guess, a couple of tracks aren't the greatest. That said, everything here is of a surprisingly high standard but a couple of tracks just drag on. Opener Hello, How Do You Do is essentially four minutes of the title repeated over and over. Works well as an opener I guess, but as a song it's pretty slight. And then You're Running You and Me and I'm Checking Out are, to my ears at least, fairly pedestrian.

But the rest of this album is surprisingly great. And strangely, I wouldn't really classify it as a cross between S.F. Sorrow and Parachute as you might expect, but rather Emotions and S.F. Sorrow. So there's very little in the way of face melting psychedelia, and instead the tracks are largely acoustic embellished with mellotrons and harpsichords and backwards guitars. Really, only Eagle's Son could have fitted on S.F. Sorrow. That song is one of three here also recorded under the Pretties' The Electric Banana incarnation, the others being Alexander and It'll Never Be Me. The Electric Banana versions are more spikey, more aggressive, while these versions are more relaxed.

So is this the lost Pretty Things album then? No, but I'd have no hestitation in saying that songs like Send You With Loving, Peace, Eagle's Son or All Gone Now are great lost Pretty Things songs. If you come to this expecting S.F. Sorrow Part 2 you may well be slightly disappointed, but if you come to this just wanting to check out some more examples of the Pretties' song-writing during this fertile period then you cannot fail to be pleasantly surprised.
