Like the early Rolling Stones, the Animals earliest material mainly consists of blues covers. While overall I prefer the Stones, I think the Animals debut album holds up much better. I realized this while listening to both of their versions of 'Around and Around' (on the Rollings Stones '12 x 5'). There was something much more raw and intense about this version here by The Animals. That in essence is what is so appealing about these guys. They really know their material, not just how to play it, but how to truly feel it while playing it. This band gives it all on their first album, heart and soul.
