Another twist of the 'country rock' rubric - this is McGuinn at his most country, probably because they were newly playing together and he hadn't had time to work on a rock sound with these country musicians. But there are three real stars here, McGuinn for being able to confidently and believably sing this southern music, Gene Clark for his skilled guitar work behind McGuinn's vocals and in his solos, and the drummer keeping the beat perfectly behind them all. The band is a less well-known line-up of the Byrds but make no mistake, these are top-quality, highly skilled country musicians with a clear vision of how to entertain.
