Empty is the best explanation here, possibly a thesis for the majority of prog. This is probably an unfair assessment; I do cherish thee earthly Anima Latina after all. But that album was forged from a medley of prog-pop n pre-post-rock influences, working off of a soulful sound that received a bearhug from the tribal rhythms of east Africa. There was a level of depth. And theres plenty of prog thats just as worthy.
Mostly though I find prog to be an exercise in showmanship, almost a watered down version of classical music. Often calculated n more focused on the tenants of ability. Or, in the true nadir of it, canned weirdness. Ugh.
The latter has some basis here. "Galactic Zoo" was a pleasant surprise, a preemptive to the deep voice effects that Animal Collective would apply on "#1". Then it spirals out of control into a  bloated nothingness n some faked out zenith. I get the feeling that Brown was just noodling at this point n trying to pass it off as being decades ahead of his time. Someone should've lent him a copy of Electric Storm.
Again, unfair. But I'm not going to pretend like this doesn't have me nodding off or hurtin' for some James Brown to show 'em how its really done. Whatever. I except my flaws even if they don't.
