Mahogany Rush was famed for the remarkable guitar playing of its founder member Frank Marino. As a teenager, he claimed to have been visited by the spirit of the late Jimi Hendrix. He took up the guitar, formed a group and began playing in a wild, spaced out style. He would later deny he ever said he was a reincarnation of Hendrix and developed his own identity with this excellent Canadian trio.
Mahogany Rush got together in 1970, featuring Marino on lead guitar, backed by Paul Harwood (bass) and Jim Ayoub (drums). Their big break came when they played at a pop festival during the 1971 Montreal Expo. This led to a record contract and the release of this debut album in 1972. 'Maxoom' was recorded in a Quebec studio with the 16 year old Marino delving into psychedelic blues and utilising wah wah effects to the max.
The ten tracks include the opening number 'Maxoom', the mind blowing 'Funky Woman' and a seven minute jam entitled simply 'Blues' that established Marino's reputation and gained Mahogany Rush a fanatical following. A fascinating album and a worthy tribute to Jimi Hendrix.
